Ambient light to facilitate sleep
Insomnia is the most common mental illness in the U.K., with one third of the population experiencing symptoms at any given time. Causes are varying and difficult to determine but are often psychological. This makes treatment difficult, and the resulting anxiety and sleep deprivation impacts the lives of sufferers with distress and disruption.
By blocking view of external stimuli and creating a uniquely sleep-associated environment, the psychological causes of insomnia can be reduced. Meanwhile, fluid coloured lightshow provides subtle calming distraction for the mind, a prerequisite for sleep. This also makes going to bed a more enjoyable experience, reducing disruptive sleep-time anxiety.
The screen pivots around dry-bearings located on either side of the bed. The illumination hub fixes directly onto the fibreglass screen support shafts and houses both the light alarm, and the array of coloured LEDs which non-harmoniously cross-fade sinusoidally to create the moving light projections over the entire inner screen surface.
Throughout the course, I’ve found aesthetics and usability most enjoyable, and am eager to further explore these in the coming years through further education or otherwise. I also look forward to developing my individual design style both personally and professionally, whilst continuing to utilize my engineering grounding.
