The course is run by two institutions representing strong and distinctive educational cultures -the School of Design at the Glasgow School of Art and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow.
This approach to design engineering education, balancing technical, human, theoretical and practical has been acknowledged as innovative and has been extremely well-received by the companies and business organisations who employ our graduates, as well as by the students themselves - who represent a new breed of design engineers.
PDE's distinctive features include:
Benefits from two distinctive educational culturesHuman-centred engineering design approach
Project-driven, practice-led, studio ethos
Strong partnerships with industry
Excellent academic links
Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Entreprenurial culture embedded in the programme
What are the programmes attributes particularly in relation to employability and product implementation
There are increasing pressures, from both existing and emerging world marketplaces, for products which not only respond to the needs of function, user and society, but which can be brought to market ever more rapidly through state-of-the-art development and manufacturing processes. Industries which develop, manufacture and market today's products need high-calibre graduates equipped to handle these processes with management skill and creative drive, and the PDE programme develops graduates with these skills.
Product Design Engineering students gain the following portfolio of skills by the time they graduate:Creative thinking skills
Multi-disciplinary skills in design and engineering
High level of investigative, analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to contribute as part of, or lead, multidisciplinary teams
Interpersonal and communication skills
Skills in creative visualisation and presentation
Skills in design synthesis
Sound engineering to IMechE chartered status
High level of design and market awareness
Ability to manage complex briefs with confidence
“a world-class best-practice exemplar”
