PinPoint
Needle Protection
In 2008, 35,788 drug users collected 3.9 million needles from exchange clinics in Scotland. The needles that are returned to the centre can put the workers at risk due to them being carelessly disposed of on people, belongings or around the site.
This risk can be removed by equipping the needles with a Pinpoint Plunger. This, once inserted into any existing hypodermic syringe, can be detected by Pinpoint’ Gloves from a distance of up to 1.5m. These can then be used to search any people, belongings or areas which may contain dangerous needles.
The Pinpoint Plunger contains a Radio Frequency Identification smart label which is identified using the antennas contained in each glove. The glove's antenna then gradually reduces the range, guiding the user slowly and carefully to the location .
For unreturned needles which filter into the outside world, the Pinpoint Gloves offer unobtrusive protection to any user working in a wide range of areas such as waste disposal or cleaning services.
My love of design started after noticing how a quick release ski binding meant my first skiing lesson ending in nothing more serious than a bruised ego. In the future I plan to encourage others to appreciate good design by providing the world with my own.
