Rehabilitation Knee Brace
The Problem
There are almost 90,000 total knee replacement (TKR) surgeries in the UK every year. A problem exists for hospitals in monitoring the recovery of patients in the vital 6 week period between their discharge and first check-up. Additionally, lack of motivation in this period accounts for patient’s poor adherence to the vital home exercise necessary for their recovery.
The Solution
The rehabilitation knee brace uses an angle sensor to measure and record the range of motion of the patient’s during leg extension. Good range of motion is a fundamental outcome of their surgery and by sending the data to the hospital their recovery can be remotely monitored. This draws attention to patient’s requiring urgent review and allows targeted early intervention of complications.
Patients progressing well can continue to the brace’s secondary function. Adjustable resistance to leg extension is used to progressively strengthen the user’s quadriceps muscles in order to restore the dynamic stability of their knee. Creating structured goals for recovery provides them with the motivation to exercise twice daily.
My Transition
After 4 year of university study, including an exchange year in Norway, I have gained the necessary skills to develop innovative and thoroughly engineered products. After graduation I am travelling to Brazil for a two month internship as part of the IAESTE program. I then intend to pursue a career in design engineering and hope to develop product’s which improve the quality of people’s everyday lives.
