Mi Top
The Problem
Each year in the UK more children are born with a Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) than Down’s Syndrome, yet their recovery is a neglected area. BPI is a birth injury that results in impaired movement of the child’s arm. The majority of children recover through physiotherapy alone but due to the relative anonymity of the injury, there is little support, guidance or research available on how to achieve this.
The Solution
To combat some of the stress on families living with a BPI injury and all the physiotherapy that comes with it, I have designed an independent, interactive physiotherapy top for children. It is a wearable instrument that produces sounds as the child moves in an effective manner. The garment is a subtle and non-invasive way of not only encouraging children to perform their exercises but also assessing their progress and retaining data for much needed research. The products aim is to instill a positive response to effective exercise, introducing it into the child’s daily routine and beyond.
My Transition
From an early age I was fascinated with how products worked, taking them apart just to carefully put them back together again. PDE has given me the unique opportunity to gain strong, multi-disciplinary skills, which translate into a variety of sectors. I am looking forward to broadening my life experiences through a diverse career in design engineering.
